I’ve never taken an art or design class, but it’s all I’ve ever done. I’ve had a long and successful career as a designer and illustrator and I have my own commercial design business. Now I’m changing direction to do what I’ve always wanted to do. In college, I made prints of my ink drawings and sold them. They were noticed and led to an opportunity to start a career in commercial art and design.
Despite a successful career, for the last 30 years I would have preferred to be doing my own fine art. I was always too busy, too stressed and never had an opportunity to pursue it. So I’ve finally decided to shut down the commercial work, apply the lessons I learned in design, and go for it.
I paint digitally because it’s the only medium I know. I use photographs for reference only. I scan pencil, ballpoint or marker sketches as a guide for Photoshop’s painting tools. Every pixel in my work is “painted” by hand. I’m trying to come full circle. I started out making prints, now I want to go back to my roots using a medium I’ve mastered in order to create the work I’ve alway wanted to create. I’ve only been doing digital paintings for a couple of years but I’ve had some success, sold some prints and won several awards. I was even recently commissioned to do a painting for NASA and NOAA.
I’ve decided to dedicate the rest of my life to painting nature and the wildlife that has fascinated me since childhood. I’ve always spent much of my free time in fields and forests observing the environment around me. Many of the animals I’m familiar with may not be around in 50 or 100 years. I want to document them the best I can, while I can.Hopefully, in some small way, I can communicate an appreciation and knowledge of the wild world to the public in general.Fine art is still a new endeavor for me. Recently I’ve sort of locked myself away, trying to master my craft, improve my work and build a portfolio. Now it’s time to get my art in front of people. I want my work to be seen. I have no idea if my efforts will be accepted and appreciated, but I’ve had enough success to be encouraged and I’m determined to give it my best shot.
