Theatrical stage work, audio usage, paintings, and immersive experiences are all a part of my current art processes in which I explore psychological impacts stemming from social and environmental influences. More specifically, these explorations fall under 1) as a product of our life experiences, the outcome of those scenario(s) shape who we become; and 2) romanticizing the future suits as a coping mechanism to deal with reality. To approach this concept, I seek after the one thing that connects us all back to the sole purpose of living: our life goals…our dreams. As much as we try to abide by— what seems like tangible aspirations— reality knocks to distort our visions and obliterate the utopia bubble in which our hopes dwell upon. I painted these women posed with such confidence and stoked in glamor, thinking about the role of Black-female, back up singers from the ’60s-’80s. The idea of pushing these women in the background, yet making them so visually prominent relates to the themes of representation, validity, and hopefulness. The gold leaf sculpting around their bodies, with the subjects emerging out of a dark and muted background, makes the women appear dreamlike as I toyed with the chiaroscuro effect. Furthermore, recreating a “nightlife”/ “show ready” set up, allows the vibrant, lively, and electrifying qualities I associate with these type of settings [clubs or theaters] to function as a fictional world. And this fictional world is a utopia bubble providing a numbing relief where one can escape reality and live vicariously through hopes and dreams. In other words, we are to imagine ourselves being in these women's' spotlight. As a way to feel important. As a way to feel with purpose. As a way to feel not forgotten about.
Artistes like Kara Mae Walker and Susan Kae Grant inspired me to delve between mixing theatrical principalities with the critical role of human consciousness by exploring the environment we come from. I refer to many of Motley’s
